Let’s go on vacation to the oldest city in Georgia, Savannah.
It was founded in 1733 with its beautiful oak trees laced with moss hanging down so perfectly that it seems like a picture. You are walking on the cobblestone streets that have been around for hundreds of years. Savannah is a charming southern city to discover the culture, food, and art. It is also only 20 minutes from Tybee Island. That is the closest beach, but there are other beaches to visit, like Cumberland Island, Jekyll Island, and St. Simons Island. Visit exploregeorgia.org
Travel
So, how do you get to Savannah, Georgia? By plane, train, or car. The main highways are 95 and 16. It is a beautiful drive and also close to Florida and South Carolina where there are also many beaches to visit.
Pick a Plan
Savannah has a rich history. If you do not have a plan, it can be stressful, so it's best to think about what you are interested in for the first time. The culture is fantastic, and the food is plentiful. I have listed a few main ones below.
There are so many history and culture tours to choose from it is best to sit down with all of the links in this page and make a plan. VisitSavannah.com
Forsyth Park is in the historical area and is draped with Spanish moss oak trees. The park has a café with a visitor’s center where you can gather more information. On Saturday, it has a Market on the South Side of the park. They have artists and live music, and you can dine at one of the classy restaurants and buy fresh food and souvenirs.
River Street- walk the cobblestone street to see the beautiful Savannah River. Then enjoy the boardwalk and listen to the music as it makes you dance to the beautiful sounds in the air. The music reminds me of New Orleans. Go into the shops and see the unique clothes you want to buy for the exciting night you will have with friends or your partner in crime.
Ghosts and Gravestones Tour- board a trolley and meet the ghosts of Savannah. They tell stories of the warehouses believed to be haunted by the slaves of the Civil War. They say there are genuinely ghosts that haunt these buildings and graveyards, so they say, but I will not stick around to see.
The First African Baptist Church-Historic Landmark District
Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist-Historic Landmark District- French Gothic architecture.
Experience Savannah’s Plant Riverside District: Places to dine:
Graffito-Neapolitan-style pizza — This place has gotten great reviews on its pizza. The owner says it is a new gathering place where high-energy, high-style pizza meets for an unforgettable culinary experience.
Also, street art adorns this place, so visit the next time you are in Savannah and roam the streets with its beautiful trees and art.
District Smokehouse—barbeque—has gotten great reviews. It is on the waterfront and has an open-air bar. It has a great southern barbeque menu, so after you stroll by the river, stop by for dinner and a drink.
Riverside Biergarten-German-style menu and locally crafted beers — This restaurant is on the riverfront and offers the best German traditional food and culture. You must come by to experience their crafted beer and German food.
Baobab Lounge-African Savannah — One of the best nightclubs in Savannah that offers the past and present of Africa. It celebrates all of the cultures of Africa with artwork throughout different regions. I have not seen this but next time I go, I am going to make an effort to see all the artwork and taste the food for the first time.
Here is a short list of other activities to look for:
Cruises and boat tours.
Walking tours from the Civil War, homes, graves, spooky tours, and many more.
Hop on and off tours or bus tours.
The Historic District has always been a favorite.
City Market.
Family Friendly Activities.
Many Restaurants, Pubs, and coffee shops.
There are many more nightclubs for adults in that area.
There are many hotels, cabins, B&Bs, and campgrounds.
There are so many beautiful places to stay here, especially their B&Bs. You may decide to go camping or stay in a motel. Savannah’s waterfront is such a beautiful place, and it is the center of so many beaches around. The coast of Georgia is a great place to visit.
The top pick for visitors is “The Riverboat.” It is a 1.5-hour sightseeing cruise in the harbor. It costs $40.72. You will hear the sound of cannons coming from Old Fort Jackson. Savannah’s History is narrated, and you will hear the history of modern-day ships from around the world that come into the harbor. It is wheelchair accessible, and you can purchase tickets from the Bar and Grill.
Savannah is one of my favorite places to visit. I have been here several times and will return soon—probably this year if I go to Tybee Island. If you are near the coast of Georgia, make Savannah one of your stops. But look things up online, or it can be confusing.
