When I retired from teaching special education, I started a small-scale farm raising heritage animals including Gulf Coast Sheep and American Guinea Hogs. In the course of researching the history of the Guinea Hogs and conducting a census for the sheep for The Livestock Conservancy, I learned about the ecosystem where they thrived.

Very interesting. In the 1600s Spain imported sheep, horses, and cattle to the area, introducing what now are Gulf Coast Sheep, Pineywoods Cattle, Cracker Cattle, and, in Texas, Longhorn Cattle. Criollo horses spread out in different areas and adapted to communities such as the Marsh Tacky on the coast
